County commissioners voted Monday to dismiss more than half of the applicants to join a new countywide economic development panel. Accepted were Craig Dodd, Tammy Ensey, Russell Groves, Jim Hefley, Chris Hernandez, Roger Holter, and Jared Jost. Rejected were Todd Heitschmidt, Michele Hett, Rod Koons, Jane Pigorsch, Esley Schmidt, Stan Thiessen, John Wheeler, and Gene Winkler.

Sixth graders Mikelly Soyez and Hannah Stubenhofer received community service awards Monday for lining up coaches to speak and organizing a preseason clinic for Marion recreation youth baseball and softball players.

Central Park Antiques owner Nadine Iseli is selling her building on the northwest corner of 4th and Main Sts. in Marion to Jeff Lee, whose daughters Jenny Lee and Catie Zurcher plan to operate Fam Lee Bakery there.

Marion resident Bart Peace, girlfriend Dani Green, and her son, Jameson Looper, spend their evenings hunting bullfrogs at the county lake and on farm ponds where they have permission. They soak their catches in lemon juice overnight before cooking them.

Misty Hett of Marion is pushing herself to new limits — training for a triathlon Sept. 10 at Marion County Park and Lake. It will include a 500-meter swim across the lake, an 8-to-9-mile bicycle ride from the lake through Marion, and a 5-kilometer run.
