FEB. 25, 1876

The boys of Marion Centre are no longer dormant. They will no longer remain passive and have vain epithets hurled at them to the effect that there is no material in Marion Centre with which to organize a baseball club.

The Rough and Readies — for that is the name of the newly organized club — will yield the hat to none west of the Missouri River.

Ordinance No. 20: It shall be unlawful for any keeper of a saloon or barkeeper attendant thereon or other person acting in their stead, respectfully, within the corporate limits of the City of Marion Centre, Kansas, to sell, barter, give, or dispose of to any person, concerning whom notification has been given by the police authorities not to sell, barter, give, or dispose of by reason of intoxicating effects on such individual, any malt, spirituous, vinous, or distilled liquors.

A man whose name we have not learned, while digging sand from the bank of the Cottonwood River below Marion Centre last week, came near losing his life. The bank caved on him, burying him under several feet of sand and dirt.

His comrades at once set to work to dig him out, and in their haste, one of them came near ending the life of his friend with the pick — the point of that instrument just conveniently missing the buried man’s face. Luckily, the man was rescued safely from his untimely grave and will be more careful in the future.
