Two people were taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita after an ATV crashed Sunday night near Florence’s ball field during the Grand Prix weekend.
According to Undersheriff Larry Starkey the ATV was carrying four people, an 18-year-old female driver, a 13-year-old passenger, a 47-year-old female passenger, and 53-year-old Jeffrey Cooper of Cottonwood Falls when the driver lost control.
“It looks like they were maybe going a little bit too fast for where they were, hit something, and lost control,” Starkey said. “I don’t know if they hit a puddle or what they hit.”
Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor, he said.
Ambulance director Mickey Price said Cooper suffered a head injury, retrograde amnesia, and possible leg fractures.
Marion ambulance transported him to Wesley after crews initially planned to take him to Newton. They were diverting because of the severity of his condition.
The driver also was transported to Wesley as a level-one trauma patient with a possible head injury, Price said.
A third injured person, the 47-year-old female, reportedly went to a hospital by private vehicle.
All four occupants were from Cottonwood Falls, Starkey said.
