An application by H.F. Lehrer of Wichita to operate a bus line between Wichita and Emporia through Marion has been granted by the state corporation commission.

Also granted was an application by A.R. Funk of Hillsboro for a line to operate between Wichita and Abilene.

The line through Marion, known as Kansas Central Lines, will travel from Wichita through Sedgwick, Valley Center, Newton, Lehigh, Hillsboro, Marion, Elmdale, Strong City and Emporia.

Sidney Holder, Marion’s oldest citizen, will pass his 99th milestone June 16.

His daughter, Elizabeth Holder, who lives with him, says he is able to be up all the time and is in fair health.

A sweet potato plant business he has conducted for many years is still in operation, with his daughter doing the largest share of the work.

John Backhus, who farms near Tampa, has an alfalfa mill for grinding dry hay into meal, most of which is shipped to eastern points.

Captain Emil Kapaun — Father Kapaun, as he is known to this community through his long service to the Catholic church at Pilsen — came home Friday after 15 months in Burma and India. He is on inactive status and is a “free man,” as he put it, until further notice.
