Peabody plans busy holiday weekend

A series of events are planned for Memorial Day weekend in Peabody.

Peabody Historical Society will serve a fried chicken meal by donation from 11 a.m. until meals are sold out Saturday.

Meals will include potato salad, baked beans, rolls, and a selection of cakes.

On display at the society’s museum complex will be a suit that astronaut and former resident Nick Hague took with him on space shuttle missions as well as an exhibit about the 1911 Orphan Train that attempted to find homes for 15 children in Peabody.

Sunflower Theater will have an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday honoring the bowling alley history of the theater.

Former owners and managers will talk about bowling leagues and display memorabilia and pictures.

The American Legion post’s Sand Green Masters golf tournament will begin with a four-man scramble at noon Sunday.

The first Sunday Cruise of the season will be 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Hotdogs, hamburgers, and s’mores will be served around a fire pit.

Peabody-Burns High School’s sophomore class will serve a Memorial Day meal from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Peabody-Burns High School.

Included will be smoked pulled pork or shredded chicken, cheesy potatoes, corn or green beans, dessert, and a drink for $15 ($5 for children ages 10 and younger).
